Markus Butkereit strives never to lose the naivety that he had during his time painting
in the streets. He creates a unique handwriting by imagining what the words
signify rather than just copying a set calligraphy. He enters his studio with
the same energy and speed that he acquired when tagging in dangerous and often
dirty environments. This has allowed him to invent his own type of writing.
This pictorial language does not represent things, it
symbolises them or even makes them appear, such as the Minotaur figure that
does not seem to be painted but instead written. On his canvases, Markus Butkereit pulls from deep within the words
a mixture of passion and rage ; words which would have never been able to evoke
all of these emotions without the artist’s ingenuity.
