John Matos dit
"CRASH" appose sa marque sur les trains de New York dès l’âge de 13
ans. C’est sans difficulté que ce pionnier du Street Art passe, dès 1978,
des trains aux cimaises.
Cet art "underground"acquiert sa reconnaissance dans le monde de l’art lorsque CRASH laisse murs
et trains pour exposer chez Sidney Janis et à la galerie Real Art Ways aux
côtés de Jean-Michel Basquiat et Keith Haring. C’est la naissance du
Post-graffiti : la transposition du graffiti des trains aux cimaises.
En effet,
peindre à l’extérieur lui fait prendre conscience que le
graffiti dépasse la simple production de lettres ou le prétexte
d’afficher son nom. Il est une source d’émotion brute forgée dans la rue
qui va inspirer son travail sur toile. Comme il
l’explique : « Mon premier studio fut le métro. Je ne pourrai
jamais le chasser de mon cœur ».
Dès lors, l’atelier
lui accorde le temps que lui refuse la rue pour lui permettre de s’exprimer
librement. Ses œuvres, plus personnelles, se rapprochent de
l’expressionnisme abstrait où une peinture rapide et puissante aux
couleurs vives dégage le même sentiment de violence qu’à ses débuts. Il ne
cesse d’innover. Il est l’un des premiers à adjoindre la figuration 3D au
lettrage : fragments de visage, yeux se mêlant aux lettres de son nom.
Son style, consacré
par les plus grands musées, est à l’origine de toute une expression graphique
qui ne cesse d’inspirer les jeunes générations d’artistes sans toutefois
jamais être égalé. Peut-être cette influence est-elle due à la fidélité de ce
précurseur, à ses inspirations premières ?
