Né en 1961 à New York. Vit et travaille à New York.
Pionner de l’Aérosol (R)evolution, comme l’avait nommée Phase 2, John Matos dit Crash, recouvre les métros new yorkais dès l’âge de 13 ans. Il dit de son travail qu’il « établit un lien visuel entre la vie de la rue et la société conventionnelle ». Dès la fin des années 1970, il transpose son travail sur toile. Il expose en 1983 à la galerie Sidney Janis de New York et depuis multiplie les expositions à travers le monde. Il illustra également une série de guitares dont une pour Eric Clapton surnommée « Crashocaster ». Il a également intégré les collections les plus prestigieuses : celles du MOMA à New-York, du Brooklyn Museum of Art, du Groninger Museum, ou du Stedelijk à Amsterdam.
